Doctors suggest we do a little bit of exercise everyday. Try walking up a couple of flights of stairs. Or up escalators. Although, if you are chubby, you're going to sweat a lot. Which will draw attention to the very thing you are trying to deal with. So much for doctors.
But try walking as much as you can. If that's only from the dessert trolley to the cheese board and back again - well that's a starter. Well, no it isn't - it's a pudding. But you get the idea.

What's the quickest and easiest way to make a friend? Smiling. What's the simplest way to brighten up someone's day? Smiling. What happens when they don't smile back? Keep on smiling. What if someone smiles at you and you don't feel like smiling back. Do it anyway. Smiling makes the world a better and friendlier place. Give it a try today and smile a while! 13 November 2008, 01:19anything

Wake up and smell the horses
I recently traded in my car for a bike.
It feels like a massive life change but in some ways, the changes that I notice are quite small.
For years I thought that living where I live (in Welwyn, Hertfordshire), life without four wheels would be far too inconvenient to contemplate. How would I get to the station, buy food, visit friends and family?
The decision to sell my car was fairly easy to make - I couldn't afford to pay for all the things it needed to pass its MOT. So I decided to invest in two wheels and to give the car free life a whirl.
The first thing I have noticed is that I am more aware of things.
I notice the weather (of course), my hamstrings, the speed of cars around me...but one of the smallest and best things I notice is the smell of horses.
I now cycle to the railway station every morning and I pass fields with horses (often rolling with their legs in the air) and they smell so fantastic. Really horsey. It reminds me that I live in the country. Before, in my all too recent car days, I flew past the horses and we were separated by glass.
The other thing I have noticed is that I feel more balanced. I'm kind of a bit wobbly still, as a cyclist, but when I arrive at my destination I get off my bike and feel that I've used both sides of my body equally. Before, when I got out of my car, I felt that one leg was in one position, the other in another and I would always try to shake and stretch myself even again.
As for getting fitter and feeling better, only time will tell, but I think I'm moving in a positive direction.
Oh, and I got some information in the post from Sustrans (sustrans.org.uk), which made me feel part of a new club. A bit like joining the Tufty Club, if anyone remembers that.

walking
Iv started to walk to Musselburgh instead of getting the bus. It takes 10-20 mins depending on how fast I walk. The bus takes 10 min but u need to wait ages for it. So its quicker and saves me money :) 29 May 2008, 16:01
Workplace Cycle Challenge
Hey, I've just read about this initiative from TfL that encourages us all to cycle to work, "Workplace Cycle Challenge". I think it's great! And if you need an extra nudge, there are prizes to be won. www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/8168.aspx 20 May 2008, 11:11
a dogs not just for life its for walks
i have a very loveable big dog (and i mean BIG!) so at least twice a day 365 days a year i get the big eyed look, followed by the soft whining to the full blown pants (and if thats ignored he just climbs on me and squashes me) till i say those magic words do you want to go for a walk then. however on nov 5th he only gets the 1 walk as no way is he going out with all the bangs and screeches in the sky

walk to work (or school)
Walking more does so much good in so many ways! First of all, think of yourself. You will do someting for your overall fitness, perhaps saving yourself from heart disease or other health problems in the future. Recent research also indicates that those who walk for half an hour a day get fewer colds and flu! Who wouldn't like that? And you'll feel more relaxed. If you have a beautiful place to walk (I can see the hillsides) you will feel spiritually or emotionally renewed also! Walking is also good for your community - you meet up with your neighbors (neighborhoods where people know each other are safer - ask a police officer), you keep an eye on what's going on (I call the graffiti hotline when I see something's been tagged), you get to greet people and practice that other action -smiling. Finally, it's good for the environment (especially if you eat locally grown food). By walking you add less to global warming, particulate polution, and energy consumption. Overall, its an easy way to make a positive impact on the world! So get out the door a few minutes earlier - you might save the world!
